The facelift is probably the most familiar cosmetic surgery procedure and the one most individuals think of when they hear the phrase "cosmetic surgery."
Once exclusively a procedure for the rich and famous, now more and more of the mainstream population are appreciating that a facelift could help them look as good as they feel, too. The "plastic" or "pulled" look that was the signature of a facelift of years ago no longer has to be the telltale sign of a facelift. In fact, often no one can tell that you have had a facelift, yet you can look up to 10 years younger and still look totally natural. The average facelift done today will last 10 to 15 years, and follow-up procedures in later years can keep you looking younger even longer.
The best facelift candidates are men and women whose face and neck have started to sag but still have good skin elasticity. Strong, well-defined bone structure is also a plus. These days, facelifts are being performed successfully on patients who are in their 70s and 80s!
Facelift patients experience minimal discomfort and are able to resume most normal activities and return to work after about two weeks. Most bruising can be concealed with make-up after just a few days. Exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided for two to three months after surgery, and a good sunblock should always be used for protection of the rejuvenated face.
After their recuperation, most patients marvel at their younger, refreshed look and say "I wish I'd done it sooner."
Selecting The Right Plastic Surgeon
For Your Face Is Critical
- Consider the surgeon's aesthetic sense, experience, reputation and results.
- Select a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and who has a special interest and extensive experience in facial plastic surgery.
- Do as much research as you can. Talk to people who are satisfied with their own facelifts and those whose results you like.
- Check the surgeon's reputation for facial work and natural-looking results.
- Analyze the surgeon's artistic ability and philosophy by reviewing a portfolio with a variety of photographs of the surgeon's own facelift results. Watch for a soft, balanced, natural look that gives a younger, refreshed appearance. Avoid radically changed or distorted appearances. The pre-operative and post-operative photographs should show comparable front and side views of patients. Try to find a surgeon who has numerous photographs of results that you find appealing.
