Options for Men

Plastic surgery has become increasing popular among men for many of the same reasons it has among men. Baby Boomers, especially, feel the need to project a vibrant, refreshed public image when working alongside or competing with younger career men. A younger, more alert appearance certainly has its benefits for those men who plan to be in the workplace for several more years.

A tired, weary look usually is noticed first in the eyes. Excess skin and fat deposits can be removed from both the upper and lower lids, eliminating the heavy, hooded look above the eyes and the bags and wrinkles underneath.

An upper blepharoplasty alone takes about an hour and is performed under local anesthesia. There is some swelling and bruising that usually is gone within a few days' time. A lower blepharoplasty is done under general anesthesia and requires a little more healing time. These procedures impose relatively little restriction on activity. Either procedure, or both together, will produce a much more refreshed appearance.

Another telltale sign of aging is a neck that looks full and thick from excess fat and loose, sagging skin. This area is difficult for men to conceal with clothing, making a neck lift with or without liposuction ideal for those who want to rid themselves of that extra fullness or loose skin under the chin and around the collar. This surgery, done under general anesthesia, produces some swelling and bruising and requires several days of limited movement and activity. The resultant slimmer, tighter contour of the neck and chin can make quite a dramatic change in the overall appearance of the entire face.

A concern of many men of all ages is fat deposits in areas that are unresponsive to diet and exercise. These deposits are typically in the abdomen, flanks (“love handles”), and breasts. Clothing often conceals these areas, but a lot of men, especially those who must meet certain size and proportion standards for their jobs, find that liposuction of these areas effectively solves this problem. Generally, the aftereffects of liposuction are some swelling, bruising, and soreness. The short recuperative time after liposuction generally allows the patient to return to work in as little as two to three days. Depending upon the extent of the liposuction, limitations are usually minimal, and satisfaction with the results is great.
