Blepharoplasty in Virginia Beach
The eyes are the primary facial feature that communicates fatigue, exhaustion, and aging (and, likewise, vitality and youth). Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) can rejuvenate the eyes by reducing bags, sagging skin, puffiness, and other signs of aging of the upper and/or lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery may be performed for cosmetic reasons to bring a brighter more open appearance to the eye area or to improve sight by lifting drooping eyelids out of the field of vision. The problems around the eyelids may be worsened by sagging of the brow, causing even more heaviness of the upper eyelids. For this reason, blepharoplasty may be performed alone or along with fractional laser skin resurfacing to lift the brows.
Before & After

Whether performed on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both, blepharoplasty requires the placement of small, precise incisions to remove sagging skin and reduce bulges or puffiness of the eyelids. Incisions are hidden in the lash line or the crease of the lid, leaving them virtually undetectable once healed.
Is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Right for Me?
Common problems that may be addressed by blepharoplasty include:
- Loose or sagging skin
- Excess skin with folds or wrinkles
- Hooding of the upper eyelid
- Fatty deposits that appear as bags or puffiness
- Hollowness under the eyes
Dr. Hugo will evaluate your eyelids, to help you select the best procedure to restore volume and youthful contours. In addition to surgical procedures, Dr. Hugo may recommend non-surgical treatments to produce optimal results. These include Botox® Cosmetic to reduce dynamic wrinkles, and volumizers such as Sculptra® to correct hollows that appear as dark circles under the eyes. The DOT Fractional CO2 laser may be used to tighten eyelid skin and improve wrinkles and fine lines. Additional topical treatments for increasing lash volume, such as Latisse®, are also available.

Procedures
Upper Eyelid Surgery (Upper Blepharoplasty)
Upper blepharoplasty or eyelid lift is a very commonly performed plastic surgery procedure. This is because it is a safe and relatively straightforward procedure that produces significant results. Upper blepharoplasty is an easy one-hour procedure done in our office under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. We provide a tranquilizer tablet if patients are anxious. Excess sagging skin is removed through an incision hidden in the normal crease of the upper eyelid. Sutures are removed after three days. Dissolving sutures are not used, as these result in obvious scars. Bruising and swelling improve within a few days, and patients are usually able to go back to work within a week. A good camouflage makeup or tinted sunscreen can help conceal any residual bruising.
Lower Eyelid Surgery (Lower Blepharoplasty)
Upper and lower blepharoplasties are often done together. Lower eyelid surgery is a more complex procedure, usually done on an outpatient basis under sedation and local anesthesia. It is a delicate procedure with the exact technique and surgical plan uniquely designed for each of our Virginia Beach eyelid surgery patients’ individual needs. The lower eyelid incision can sometimes be made on the inside of the lower lid with no visible scar (transconjunctival blepharoplasty). Alternatively, an incision can be hidden just below the lower lid lashes. Excess sagging skin and bulges of fat or puffiness are removed. Sutures are usually removed in three days. Bruising and swelling gradually resolve in one to two weeks. Camouflage makeup or tinted sunscreen can be used to hide any remaining discoloration or swelling. Contact lenses can be worn when comfortable, typically within 10 to 14 days. We encourage you to use dark glasses with ultraviolet light filters to protect you from sun and wind for one to two months after surgery.
Non-Surgical Eyelid Procedures with Dr. Hugo
Fine lines and wrinkles on the skin of the upper and lower eyelids may be corrected by DOT Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing prior to or after the surgery. Hollows under the eyes can cause dark circles and the appearance of aging and tiredness, and sometimes a gaunt look. Dr. Hugo prefers to correct these under-eye hollows with Juvederm, Restylane filler, or an injectable volumizer, Sculptra®, which builds the cheek area under the eye with your own natural collagen. The results last two years or longer. With an excellent artistic sense, Dr. Hugo has built a reputation for always providing natural results for his patients. Due to his skill, experience, attention to detail, and meticulous planning, Dr. Hugo’s patients are consistently satisfied and pleased with his work. Before and after photos of patients here in the Virginia Beach area are available to help you visualize the possibilities.
How Much Does Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Cost?
